Stormzy has announced he is launching a new scheme called The Stormzy Scholarship. The programme will help four black British undergraduates attend the University of Cambridge, by paying for up to four years of tuition fees and providing a maintenance grant. He will fund two students this year and two in 2019.

The launch comes after the university admitted that it needed help increasing the number of black British students attending. It was discovered that between 2012 and 2016, some colleges received no black students.

Writing about the scholarship on Instagram, Stormzy said: "We as a minority are still heavily under represented at the top universities and I pray this scholarship serves as a reminder that we are more than capable of studying at places of this calibre.

"Congratulations to all the A-Level students getting their results today, be proud of yourselves despite what you got and overstand that this is only the tip of the iceberg for what’s to come! This is my proudest venture thus far and I look forward to seeing some young black geniuses go on to achieve at Cambridge this scholarship."

Students eligible for the scholarship must be of black ethnicity and already hold an offer from the university. The deadline for applications is August 30.
