The founder of Burning Man — Larry Harvey — has passed away.

An simple black and white photo, an official statement, and a quote from Harvey has taken over the organization’s website. With this full page spread, Burning Man remembers its fearless leader.

Our founder, friend, and original instigator, Larry Harvey has passed away. Larry was a visionary, a mentor, a philosopher, and a passionate advocate for Burning Man’s culture and principles. We have lost our founder. The world has lost a great human being.

It’s true. The dance community has lost another amazing individual.

Larry Harvey was said to be in critical condition a couple of weeks ago, after suffering from a “massive stroke.” He was surrounded by close friends and family, and Burners sent an outpouring of love and appreciation leading up to the time of his passing. Though everyone hoped he would recover, he passed peacefully yesterday morning at 8:24am in San Francisco, with members of his family at his side.

We’ll leave you with a quote from Larry Harvey.

If you bring a little soul to the encounter,
maybe you’ll see something you didn’t look for;
maybe you’ll open your heart a little,
and see things that you didn’t imagine.
