Nandi Bushell has posted a tender, piano-led cover version of Nine Inch Nails’ ‘Hurt’ on social media – check out the video below.
The 14-year-old is known primarily as a drum prodigy, but she is now showing her skills on a second instrument, performing a delicate, hushed rendition of the 1994 classic.
She posted the track on Instagram, alongside a message that reads: “Experimenting…I discovered the song ‘Hurt’ by Trent Reznor & @nineinchnails from the @johnnycash version.”
‘Hurt’ found a new audience when Johnny Cash recorded it in 2002 for his album ‘American IV: The Man Comes Around’. NME once named the accompanying video the greatest of all time.
Bushell continued: “It’s so powerful. Obviously, I can’t relate to the lyrics. But I wanted to create my own version to understand what makes it such a moving piece of art.”
“Although it will never compare with the @nineinchnails or @johnnycash version I hope my take on ‘Hurt’ makes you hear this work of art from a fresh perspective. I am also trying new ways of singing.”
Bushell appeared at Download Festival this June, playing John Lennon’s ‘Power To The People’ alongside Tom Morello, which you can watch below.

The 14-year-old is getting used to appearing in front of huge crowds, as just a few months earlier she played a prodigious 10-minute rock drum medley at the O2 Arena in London, as part of the Young Voices youth choir tour. Bushell played songs by The Who, Metallica, Foo Fighters, Nirvana and many others.
She shot to viral fame for her online drum battles with Foo Fighters’ Dave Grohl, has been playing drums since she was five years old. Now a social media star, Bushell regularly posts videos of her playing various covers, including songs by Nirvana, Metallica and Queen. She has also released several original tracks, such as ‘The Shadows’, ‘Gods and Unicorns’, and ‘Into the Abyss’.
Most recently, Bushell appeared on the Drumeo channel on YouTube to play along to Twisted Sisters’ ‘We’re Not Gonna Take It’, without having ever heard the song before.
Nine Inch Nails, meanwhile, have teamed up with Dr. Martens for a boot collection to celebrate the 30th anniversary of ‘The Downward Spiral’, the album which spawned ‘Hurt’.
