Boundary-pushing Brazilian competition YAGA hosts its inaugural version this weekend (November three to four) and has locked in each SOPHIE and Arca for his or her debut performances within the nation.

The competition will happen at São Paulo venue Love Story, with SOPHIE and Arca confirmed as headliners.

Described a press launch as “a celebration of queer musical artistry", the crew behind YAGA purpose to attach Brazil’s LGBTQ+ underground with worldwide artists with a purpose to “raise up the local people at a tense second of politically-driven, anti-gay, anti-trans backlash.”

YAGA’s first iteration takes place simply days after anti-LGBTQ+ politician Jair Bolsonaro was voted president.

Other artists on the invoice embody worldwide names akin to Total Freedom and Juliana Huxtable, in addition to native Brazilian artists like Linn da Quebrada and BADSISTA.

"Partying in Brazil is inherently political, and queer nightlife in São Paulo is at a crossroads,” explains competition co-founder Sophie Secaf. “The occasion scene is absolutely the primary place to have given many LGBTQ+ individuals in São Paulo a voice and a livelihood. It’s flourished lately, however now we’re all terrified of elevated crackdowns on how queer individuals utilise public areas.”

In a transfer that may assist help LGBTQ+ attendance, YAGA is giving freely free and discounted tickets relying on revenue.
