Danny DeVito has thrown his hat into the ring to play the role of Wario in the upcoming Super Mario Bros. Movie sequel.

The Super Mario Bros. Movie was one of the highest-grossing films of 2023 (second behind Barbie) and is the highest grossing film based on a video game of all time.

Directed by Aaron Horvath and Michael Jelenic, the animated film was a collaboration between Illumination (Despicable Me), Nintendo and Universal Pictures.

Chris Pratt voiced the iconic plumber, alongside Charlie Day as Luigi, Anya Taylor-Joy as Princess Peach, Jack Black as Bowser, Keegan-Michael Key as Toad and Seth Rogen as Donkey Kong.

The runaway success of the film made a sequel all but a certainty, and after months of speculation, it was confirmed in March, with a planned release date of April 3, 2026.

And now, DeVito has said in an interview with The Movie Dweeb on YouTube that he would be up for taking on the role of Wario, the archnemesis of Mario. It is not yet known which characters from the universe will be included in the film.

“You never know what happens in the world. I’m up for a lot of things,” DeVito said. “I’m ready to do a lot of things, so, whatever’s coming, I look at, I see, I evaluate.”

When the host suggested he would get in touch with Pratt to make it official, DeVito replied: “Yeah, let [Chris Pratt] know. You should tell him that I’m going to take them to the cleaners, but I should be in the movie.”

In other DeVito news, he reflected on his time playing Penguin in Batman Returns, as he jokingly scolded Michael Keaton at the Oscars, and shared his desire to work with Arnold Schwarzenegger again in a reprise of their 1980s and ’90s success as a movie double act.
