Svoboda is at his classical and experimental best

Returning with a powerful, emotively haunting and unique new EP – Finland based composer Simon Svoboda is no stranger to pushing boundaries with his complex neo-classical pieces. The five tracks on the EP draw inspiration from the stark and haunting beauty of the Finnish winter, with each piece named after a different element of this season.

Svoboda’s use of the cello as the central instrument is both innovative and deeply emotive. His minimalist style, characterized by arpeggiated cello chords and delicate falsetto vocals, creates an ethereal soundscape that feels both expansive and intimate. The title track, “Kaamos,” captures the essence of the darkest time of year in Finland, using layers of sound to evoke a sense of stillness and introspection.

“’Kaamos’ is a collection of five minimalistic songs inspired by different elements of the Finnish winter,” he adds on the EP as a whole. “It describes the darkest period of the year in Finland, a time that is beautiful and eerie. The remaining tracks draw inspiration from other aspects of winter in Finland: ‘Halla’ (frost), ‘Savu’ (smoke), ‘Usva’ (mist), and ‘Valo’ (light). I was fortunate to collaborate with some incredible artists and close friends on this EP. Ukrainian violinist Varvara Vasylieva features on ‘Savu’, Finnish organist William Häggblom on ‘Halla’, and my sister Helen Svoboda’s beautiful vocals can be heard in ‘Valo’. My influences include Arvo Pärt, Thom Yorke, Yann Tiersen, Tigran Hamasyan, and my sister Helen Svoboda.” – Simon Svobda

The collaboration with other artists adds further depth and texture to the EP. Ukrainian violinist Varvara Vasylieva, Finnish organist William Häggblom, and Svoboda’s sister, Helen Svoboda, each bring their distinct talents to tracks like “Savu” and “Valo,” enhancing the atmospheric quality of the music.

Overall, Kaamos is a beautifully crafted EP that highlights Simon Svoboda’s ability to seamlessly blend classical and ambient music, creating a listening experience that is both haunting and serene.
