Few songs capture the essence of 80s synth-pop quite like Alphaville’s “Sound Like A Melody,” and now, Luca Belluco has transformed the iconic track into a mesmerizing melodic techno masterpiece.
With a driving bassline at its core, this rework transforms the beloved 80s hit into a modern melodic techno anthem. The remix preserves the essence of the original while infusing it with immersive textures, deep rhythms, and an evolving buildup that keeps the energy alive from start to finish.
Belluco was drawn to remix this track for deeply personal reasons. “I was lulled by music from the 80s like Alphaville, Bee Gees, and Claude François,” he shares. “I wanted to tackle this piece because my mother loves it, so it is a little nod to her.”
Beyond personal sentiment, Belluco saw an opportunity to revive an underrated classic, noting that while David Guetta recently reworked “Forever Young,” there have been few remixes of Alphaville’s discography.
From an early age, music played a transformative role in Belluco’s life. He discovered DJing at 15, an experience that helped him find his voice and build connections. “It saved me from bullying at school and allowed me to create connections with people! Seeing people dance and have fun—it’s total fun!” he explains. This passion is evident in his approach to crafting remixes, ensuring each track resonates with its audience on an emotional level.
Inspired by the likes of Zafrir, Kevin de Vries, Massano, and Tale Of Us, Belluco embraces a production style that merges ethereal melodies with pounding beats. His rework of “Sound Like A Melody” seamlessly integrates Alphaville’s classic vocals with new-age synth progressions and rhythmic precision. The challenge, he explains, was finding the perfect balance between nostalgia and contemporary club energy, ensuring the iconic vocal elements fit naturally within the new sonic landscape.
Working within Ableton 12, Belluco utilized tools like Nexus, VPS Avenger, Sylenth, and FabFilter Pro to craft a polished, dynamic sound. His attention to detail shines through in every aspect of the remix, from crisp snare rolls to interstellar effects that transport listeners to another dimension.
Belluco believes remixing 80s groups is essential to keeping their music fresh and relevant for new generations. “I think it’s important to remix groups or artists from the 80s. It brings freshness to the group and the style! Alphaville was an obvious choice—a group that worked well and still works today.”
This remix is a testament to Belluco’s ability to honor the past while pushing electronic music forward. Whether played in a warehouse rave or an intimate nightclub, this “Sound Like A Melody” remix bridges decades of musical evolution, inviting listeners to lose themselves in its hypnotic groove. It is also an exciting look at the promising road ahead for Belluco in 2025.
