Dave Grohl Reveals “Newfound Love” for Alice in Chains: “They’re My Favourite Band Now”

Dave Grohl has opened up about a "newfound love" for the legendary '90s grunge outfit Alice in Chains, admitting that the band has recently ascended to the top of his personal playlist. Despite his own deep roots in the Seattle scene, the Foo Fighters frontman revealed that his appreciation for the group has reached a new peak decades after their commercial prime.

During a recent sit-down with Apple Music’s Zane Lowe to discuss the Foo Fighters’ latest album, Your Favorite Toy, Grohl reflected on the vocal powerhouses that defined the grunge era. While the conversation naturally touched upon his late Nirvana bandmate Kurt Cobain and Soundgarden’s Chris Cornell, it was the mention of Alice in Chains frontman Layne Staley that sparked Grohl’s enthusiastic admission.

“Oh my God, dude, here’s the best thing about driving around with [my daughters] Violet and Harper in a car: I have this newfound love of Alice in Chains,” Grohl told Lowe. “It’s back. They’re like my favourite band now. They should have been 35 years ago, but now I’m like, ‘Wait, where was I on that one?’”

Grohl further elaborated on the visceral connection he feels toward the music, noting that every song becomes a "strand in your DNA." He emphasized the profound connectivity found in the energy of music, suggesting that these classic tracks have become an inseparable part of his identity.

The interview comes as the Foo Fighters continue to promote Your Favorite Toy, which arrived on April 24. The record features singles such as “Caught In The Echo,” “Asking For A Friend,” and “Of All People.” To celebrate the launch, Grohl and Pat Smear recently surprised fans at a London listening party, joining a karaoke session of their 1997 classic “Monkey Wrench.”

Critical reception for the new album has been largely positive, with many noting a return to the band's high-energy roots. While some critics have pointed out that Grohl’s lyricism remains straightforward, tracks like “Child Actor” have been praised for their introspective depth, showing the frontman examining his own need for validation after decades in the spotlight.

The Foo Fighters are currently preparing for an extensive global tour. The schedule includes a European stadium run with two nights at Liverpool’s Anfield Stadium in late June, followed by a North American stadium tour this summer. Looking further ahead, the band has already confirmed dates for Australia and New Zealand spanning late 2026 and early 2027.

Beyond the music, Grohl has remained a fixture in the headlines for his candid anecdotes and social commentary. He recently shared a humorous memory of accidentally insulting David Bowie and offered a rare political perspective on the current state of America, stating that the country is "deeply divided" and in need of significant change.
