Sen. Chuck Schumer (D-NY) is the hero we all need. On the eve of 4/20 he’s revealed he’s not only down with legal weed, he’s fighting for it.

In a reveal to VICE News, Schumer has confirmed putting his name down on the legislation that aims to decriminalize marijuana at the federal level. The democratic leader of the Senate and those in favor of the bill propose a “seismic shift in federal drug policy.”

With this, he also vows to back his home state of New York, or any other state for that matter, in support of legalizing weed. He thinks it’s a decision best made on a state-to-state basis.

“My personal view is legalization is just fine. The best thing to do is let each state decide on its own.”

The senator claims he hasn’t smoked before — but doesn’t see any harm in doing so.

“Ultimately, it’s the right thing to do. Freedom. If smoking marijuana doesn’t hurt anybody else, why shouldn’t we allow people to do it and not make it criminal?” Schumer said.

As the 2020 elections near, some speculate Sen. Chuck Schumer is doing this to inch ahead of the competition, but he’s made his intentions very clear.

“I’m doing it because I think it’s the right thing to do. I’ve seen too many people’s lives ruined by the criminalization,” he said. “If we benefit, so be it. But that’s not my motivation.”
