Fusion Festival 2025 | Müritz Airpark – Lärz, Germany | June 25-29, 2025
I just returned from a 9,000km (5,600-mile) journey across the globe after experiencing Fusion Festival 2025. The annual nearly-weeklong campout is the elevated festival I’ve always imagined – a fever dream of collective willpower, hallucinated into being by builders, believers, and wild-eyed wanderers with paint-stained fingers and anarchist hearts.
It rises from the cracked airfields of Müritz in Lärz, up in Northeastern Germany like a myth made manifest, sculpted from scaffolding and shared visions. I can’t quite pinpoint the moment I realized this place was different, but it overtook me quickly and whole-heartedly. Echoes of my rebellious anti-authority, zine-creating college days flooded my memories.
Time dissolved, bureaucracy vanished.

I think too often in the Western world, German directness has been misunderstood culturally as being cold, when in fact there’s a deep inherent warmth in their stoic dedication to detail and precision, born from a powerful love for humanity at its core.
At Fusion, I felt that warmth in a way that surpassed preconception and powerfully defied cliché. It was built into the details: the radical signage, the meticulous design of each space, the collective care pulsing through the infrastructure across the monstrous property. The people were effortlessly caring & accepting. The hospitality was a given, a bold act of welcome.
Antifa flags rippled beside rainbow banners, proudly & explicitly displaying acceptance stitched into the tapestry of our very existence. It need not even be questioned. Here, the politics of love were printed, painted, and planted deep into the earth. In every interaction, I felt seen. I saw others feeling seen at every turn.

This was life before stakes were created that we never signed up for.
We all belong here and Fusion makes that felt before you even step foot on their hallowed grounds. Germany – through the lens of Fusion – showed me a version of community where music united us across time & space, melding multiple languages and cultures with no corporate or capitalist stains on the living, breathing, evolving organism that is found in pure unadulterated freedom. This is how things could be. This is how things are going to be, thanks to a community of people doing the work.
If Burning Man is a swirling fever dream of sand and scale, Fusion is its stoic, spell-casting cousin from the Black Forest – a Grimm’s fairytale reimagined with subwoofers and spraypaint. It’s less “leave no trace,” and more “build the future in the ruins of the past.” The difference is in the details. I’ve seen other festivals lean into chaos for chaos’ sake, but Fusion wields its chaos like a scalpel – surgically precise, obsessively intentional. Nothing is accidental here, and yet, everything feels free & spontaneous. It’s in this paradox – precision giving birth to wildness – that the artistic eruptions happen.

Organized chaos becomes fertile ground for the explosive.
Something ancient.
Something torn.
Something viscerally real.

This is what makes Fusion different. It’s not just the scale or the stages – it’s the space it gives to the unmarketable, the sacred, the devastatingly human. It allows sorrow and beauty to exist side by side. It makes room for what cannot be explained, only felt. It entertains as much as it transforms.
slicing through the storm like a whispered prophecy.

Before her, Unknown Concept had set the stage with a flawlessly executed set of psy and techno textures that seemed to bend time. I was reminded of his set at Sisyphos a couple years earlier, grateful that I got to return to witness his evolution. Our conversations about a new heightened focus on his music & purpose were realized in real time before my eyes. Hours later, I watched his humble persona uproariously light up when Yuli Fershtat – a revered elder of the scene – played one of his tracks. He turned to his partner in excitement, who beamed beside him and held him in celebration. That moment, quiet and seismic, said everything:
Fusion is where generations of soundmakers meet across the fire.
unity through unfettered expression.
Sonic spells passed from mentor to mentee,
from thundering rain to sun-soaked silence.
