The Gobi Desert Collective out of Antwerp, Belgium are offering an ethnic journey across the world of electronic music with their most recent effort with Ampermut being a cover of The Doors‘ ‘People Are Strange’ that oozes into your bones and spins you into a web of psychedelic wonder.

Driving the beat with squishy notes and captivating listeners with layers of instrumentation the rendition gives us plenty to hold onto. Around the release Ampermut shares,

“If a song and a book were to unite, it would undoubtedly be “People Are Strange” by The Doors and Hermann Hesse’s Steppenwolf. In my early twenties, Steppenwolf profoundly shaped me, capturing the thoughts and emotions of a young man seeking deeper meaning while losing himself in the nocturnal pulse of a bustling city. It’s with great honor that I join this collaboration with the Gobi Desert Collective, channeling that distinctive “People Are Strange” essence into our musical expression.”

Gobi Desert Collective & Ampermut ‘People Are Strange’

Written by Jim Morrison and Robby Krieger, The Doors released ‘People Are Strange’ in 1967.  The single explores feelings of alienation and the sense of being an outsider. The song reflects Morrison’s experience of being misunderstood and disconnected, and it became one of the band’s signature tracks. The song’s haunting melody, combined with its introspective lyrics, captures the disorienting nature of feeling estranged from society or oneself.

Prior to ‘People Are Strange’, the Gobi Desert Collective and Ampermut collaborated on an EP for WAYU Records out of Miami.  The two immersive tracks ‘Cereza’ and ‘Good in Me’ explore the balance between light and shadow, joy and reflection.

Keep the Gobi Desert Collective voyage going by plugging to their fifth edition of ‘Ethnic Journeys’ on Proton Radio featuring music from Delights Earthly, SolSelectas and Tebra, then flip over to their side project, Alpas starting with their latest release alongside Helius and Daley Road for a rinse of shiny melodic house they have so impressively dialed in.
