When I sat down with Ian Storm for this exclusive interview, it was clear right away that his new album, “Born In The 80’s,” is more than just a collection of songs—it’s a reflection of everything that shaped him as an artist. From his earliest memories of spinning cassettes and vinyl in his dad’s restaurant to leading Storm Music Group today, Ian’s story is woven through each track on this two-disc release. Disc One, aptly titled “The Creation,” dives into twelve original songs that showcase his personal journey, while Disc Two, “The Inspiration,” brings a fresh perspective to tracks that molded his sound. It’s an ambitious effort that pays homage to where he’s been, while firmly planting his flag in today’s scene.

In our talk, Ian opened up about his roots in the 80s and how that era shaped his music.

The album title is a nod to that, a recognition of the formative power of nostalgia. And Ian’s story is not just about looking back—it’s about pulling those influences into the present, combining them with years of growth, studio experience, and a desire to connect people through music.

Ian also spoke on the importance of staying true to your creative vision—an insight every producer could benefit from. Whether it’s crafting originals or reinterpreting classic tracks, Ian’s advice is to make music that resonates personally rather than chasing what’s trending. It’s this kind of authenticity that sets “Born In The 80’s” apart—not just as a throwback, but as a bridge between generations of club music.

1 – How did growing up in the 80s influence your music and creative direction?

I was born in 85 so really young. I was interested in music and remember my dad playing vinyl in his restaurant. I particularly remember music from Enya which resonated with me. And I played “Music was my first love” on the cassette deck each morning. It was my first favourite track I remember. I had a lovely childhood and I must unconsciously have picked up a lot of music in that time and that’s why I think the sound of the 80ies resonates so much with me.

2 – The album title seems personal—how does it reflect your journey as an artist?

Definitely it has influences from 80ies, 90ies and 2000’s. A lot of elements that I encountered and resonated with me are part of the music on this album.

3 – What lessons did you learn from writing this album that you would pass on to other artists working on their first big project?

Do what you feel you should do, don’t try too much to follow trends of run after hypes. Find what resonates with you, built your vision from that and than keep aiming for that vision.

4 – If you could give advice to someone balancing original creations with reinterpreting covers, what would it be?

The Beatles started as a cover band, if you cover or sample music and in that way create a new interpretation for people to enjoy it helps a creation reach a new generation or another audience. Also you learn as an artist finding your own style. For me it feels good to create a mixture of both. As long as you don’t cover just to reach number but because you really feel the interpretation of the song.

5 – What advice would you give artists trying to build their identity while being influenced by the music they grew up with?

Incorporate the elements, inspiration is the spark to creation. All big artists have been inspired by the creations of others.

6 – Now that the album is complete, how does it feel to release something so personal?

My goal is to share my vision on music with the world for people to enjoy.

So it is amazing to see people appreciating what I do. The album for me is just the start of this. With our events and the growth of our label we strive to inspire an ever growing community of creators.
