PlayStation is celebrating the 30th anniversary of the PS1, and it is releasing a new Gran Turismo game that players can experience for free.

As reported by EurogamerMy First Gran Turismo is a free-to-play racing game launching tomorrow (December 6). The trailer states the game is “a gift to those just now discovering GT.” Players will be able to learn about cars through extensive in-game documentation, and build up a collection of vehicles they can drive.

It appears to have 18 vehicles available to drive and collect, as well as multiple race modes to try out. One of them is music rally, where a timer counts down as racing music plays.

According to a PlayStation Blog post by Kazunori Yamauchi, president of Polyphony Digital, the developer of the Gran Turismo games, “This isn’t just about playing a game; it’s about embarking on a personal driving journey.”

The game is appropriate for players of all skill ranges, as “We’ve made sure the experience is intuitive, allowing anyone to get behind the wheel and master the essentials, such as cornering, braking, and acceleration.”

There are three race events, three time trials, three music rallies, and license tests which allow players to just drive around a track testing a car.

Gran Turismo is a racing simulation series that first launched in 1997 and had its latest release, Gran Turismo 7, in 2024.

Director Neill Blomkamp helmed a movie adaptation of the game based on real-life racer Jann Mardenborough who won a video game competion and was subsequently trained as a driver.

In other news, Dragon Age: The Veilguard devs were expecting some people to hate the game because “It’s not trying to be all things to all people. It’s trying to be itself, it’s trying to be the game that it wants to be.”
