Some artists don’t just release music—they share a piece of themselves with every track. That’s exactly what IAMTHELIVING does with his debut album, Nebra Sky. Born in London and now based in Vancouver, Rian Peters has channeled his roots, his experiences, and his resilience into a project that feels as personal as it does universal. This isn’t just about slick production or catchy hooks—it’s about creating music that lifts you up, even when life throws its hardest punches.
With Nebra Sky, IAMTHELIVING blends soulful R&B with an unmistakable sense of hope. Tracks like “Light Me Up” hit with acoustic warmth and raw emotion, while “The Weekend” brings a funk-fueled energy that makes you want to move. Collaborations with artists like Kitt, Knomadic, and Braxton Cook amplify the album’s themes of connection and resilience, creating a sound that feels vibrant yet grounded in real, lived experiences.
In this interview, we get into the mindset behind the music.
IAMTHELIVING talks about growing up in London, how his environment shaped his sound, and why persistence is the backbone of any artist’s journey. He shares personal sacrifices, his inspirations, and what keeps him grounded through the ups and downs of the music industry. Whether you’re here for the music or the message, this is a conversation that highlights why Nebra Sky is more than just a debut—it’s a statement.
1. Where did you grow up, and how did your environment shape your relationship with music?
I grew up in the heart of London. Being from such a multicultural city I was fortunate to grow up listening to and being inspired by so many different genres of music which subconsciously has made its way into the DNA of my own sound.
2. Why do you think persistence is such an important part of making it in the music industry?
Because without persistence you will never know how far you can go. There’s an audience out there waiting to discover your art, waiting to appreciate what you have to offer. You could literally be on the verge of something special happening at any given moment.
3. What’s a key piece of advice you would give to your younger self at the start of your journey?
“Rian, you’ll always be learning and you’ll always be evolving, so be patient with your journey. Things will happen in due time”. Throughout the years that I have been making music, having patience makes you resilient which then leads to becoming successful.
4. What’s one of the biggest sacrifices you’ve made to stay committed to your music?
One of my biggest sacrifices would have to be moving to the other side of the world away from my family and close friends.
5. Who’s been your biggest supporter throughout your career, and what’s their impact been on your success?
My mother has been my biggest supporter, if it wasn’t for her I honestly wouldn’t be where I am today. Her love and support has kept me going. I owe everything to her.
6. Why do you think it’s important for artists to share their struggles as much as their successes?
In this industry you’re going to have highs and you’re going to have lows it doesn’t matter who you are. I think it’s even more important to share your struggles as it will show others that the journey isn’t easy and that we all go through tough times. It will inspire others to never give up.
When you get knocked down and get back up and continue to work hard, success is inevitable.
7. Who was the most influential person in your life growing up in terms of your musical development?
I first discovered Michael Jackson when I was a young boy, he has had a profound impact on me throughout my life. In my opinion he was the greatest of all time. He has created timeless music that makes people feel good and feel alive. Encouraged by his fearlessness, he has inspired me to be unique and true to myself as an artist.
