Electronic maestro Tycho (real name Scott Hansen) has created a new web application that creates a playlist based on users' local weather. In collaboration with Lee Martin, the former vice president of design at Songkick, Tycho designed the app to generate playlists that include his own music and other artists, while promoting his latest album, Weather, released on July 12.

The site, Tycho Forecast, asks permission to know the user's location. Once the user agrees, the app will find the local weather for the area and generate a playlist of 25 songs that fit the vibe of the conditions. “For example, a gusty day might produce tracks with a higher tempo,” says Lee Martin at Medium.

Those associations between weather and music were made by Martin, who used Spotify's audio features metadata and a weather app called Dark Sky. The correlation with the type of weather was made symbolically using the audio features, choosing songs that fit the particular mood associated with certain weather.

Playlists can be saved to Spotify and Apple Music after they're generated, giving users a quick and easy way to discover new music, with just a couple mouse clicks.
