When I heard that Traveler had remixed David Bowie, I initially felt the skepticism of appreciating something that had recently become sacrosanct. Some of the first reactions in the dance music world to Mr. Bowie’s passing were “please do not remix his work.” Same with Prince. While I agree with this sentiment to some extent, nothing is sacrosanct. It’s 2016. And with that being said, Traveler’s remix of “Under Pressure” pays homage to the original while updating the classic with melodic house vibes and heavy 4/4 beats that transforms the rock n’ roll classic into an energetic track reinvigorated by a new generation of artists and fans.
No doubt, the original “Under Pressure” is a perfect track. Meaningful lyrics, complex instrumentals and imbued with passion, the original speaks for itself occupying its timeless place in the musical pantheon. Given the respect this track holds across time and generations, this remix did not receive the standard EDM treatment. Traveler, the live-electronic duo who utilizes drums and keyboards in their live shows, wanted to pay homage to two of their heroes, namely, Bowie and Queen. “We actually decided to do this remix before Bowie died, simply because we loved the song,” said Traveler of the remix. “It’s meant as a tribute to those two truly remarkable artists and human beings.”
