Today (January 7), HBO and Max released a new trailer for the highly anticipated second season of the beloved video game adaptation that confirms it will launch in April this year. However, a confirmed release date has yet to be announced.
The new trailer depicts the duelling storylines between Ellie (Bella Ramsey) and new character Abby (Kaitlyn Dever), as well as returning and new characters like Pedro Pascal‘s Joel and Isabela Merced’s Dina. Check out the new trailer below.

Season two will seemingly tell the story that played out in Naughty Dog‘s acclaimed 2020 video game The Last Of Us Part II.
Ramsey, who plays Ellie in the show, has also teased a “darker” second season. “It’s really a story about revenge, and a continuation from the first season about the dangers of unconditional love,” they explained.
Pedro Pascal’s Joel is also set to return and the pair will be joined by Beef star Young Mazino as Jesse, Isabela Merced as Dina and Danny Ramirez as Manny. Ariela Barer, Tati Gabrielle, Spencer Lord, Jeffrey Wright and Catherine O’Hara will also feature alongside Kaitlyn Dever’s Abby Anderson.
While there are currently only two The Last Of Us games to pull from, showrunner Craig Mazin has suggested the show could run for four seasons. “It can end up being three or five. But four seems like a good number. Some seasons, because of the story we’re telling, will need fewer episodes and some will need more.
“The best news is the audience wants more but we will not indulge a desire for more simply to make them happier,” he added.
Game creator Neil Druckmann took a similar stance with The Last Of Us Part 3. “Just because something is successful, people think there’s all this pressure and we have to make a sequel. That’s not the case,” he said. However a new documentary on the making of the games has revealed that there’s a “concept” for a third game. “It does feel like there’s probably one more chapter to this story.”
