It was not my intention to inundate you with Drumcode this month but SUDO’s three-tracker and Layton Giordani’s “Freaks At Night” are two releases that rose to the achievement of excellence and therefore, recognition as some of the best this month, if not all year. Sasha’s collaboration with Sentre was another undeniable highlight of the month as well. It might not fall in line with the harder and faster counterparts in this chart but it’s too hard too ignore how superb it is. Enjoy Charlotte de Witte’s appearance as well. She rarely skips a beat so it’s great to watch her ascent.
Keep up with the best techno tracks so far this year via the playlist below:
1. “MERCURY” – SUDO [DRUMCODE]
“A few years ago, we decided to quit making music that suited the big label’s taste, and concentrate on making music that we were truly and genuinely happy with. We didn’t follow trends, just only concentrated on the music which we wanted to dance to on the dance floor. The ‘Real World EP’ has a lot of elements of our musical history, as well as our roots and the high-energy taste of that era.” – SUDO
2. “GLASTACY” – SASHA, SENTRE [LAST NIGHT ON EARTH]
The grandmaster of dance music, Sasha is back with another modern masterpiece he’s put together with Sentre. A duo from London who have each put in their own share of work behind the scenes for some time now. “Glastacy” is the name of the glorious tune and in case you didn’t already pick it up, it’s a nod to the famed festival in the UK which is now in our rear-view mirror.
3. “CONSTRUCTION” – SUDO [DRUMCODE]
If SUDO’s “Mercury” on Drumcode was an orgasm of the mind, “Construction” is practically an orgasm of the body. The jackhammer rhythm will cause you to uncontrollably head-bang your way through all seven minutes of this buoyant brilliance.
4. “REAL WORLD” – SUDO [DRUMCODE]
SUDO’s “Real World” completes the inclusion of all three of their Drumcode tunes in this month’s techno chart. This hardly leaves room for anyone else but the cream of the crop deserves a place at the top.
5. “HOW YOU MOVE” – CHARLOTTE DE WITTE [KNTXT]
Belgian techno princess, Charlotte de Witte is back on her imprint with this groovy banger that boasts a relentless 303 top-line.
6. “HORO” – KR!Z [BLUEPRINT RECORDS]
Hypnotic techno stalwart, Kr!z is back on Blueprint with four mind-melters. Including this title track that dives right into the vibe.
7. “FREAKS AT NIGHT” – LAYTON GIORDANI [DRUMCODE]
“My idea behind Freaks at Night was to combine techno and melodic house in a fresh way. The vocal is a classic from the 90s from a vocalist I grew up listening to out of NYC. I guess you could say this track is a vast combination of all my different influences and is a good representation of what’s to come.” – Layton Giordani
8. “ECHO” – CARLA SCHMITT [GEARS]
French techno producer, Carla Schmitt opens up melodically with this beauty of banger she calls, “Echo.”
9. “NOT ANOTHER SUMMER” – REGAL [INVOLVE RECORDS]
Regal‘s newest EP leads off with a Salt-N-Pepa remake which I would recommend skipping and going straight to this very title track that bangs properly at a speedy 145 BPM.
The second volume of ARTCORE‘s Off Sonar compilation is certainly pay-trance leaning but CHRS’s “Mental Groovy” is nothing but raucous warehouse energy in a span of just over four minutes. Turn it up!
Sicilian producer, LPV is back on CRISIS OF MAN for his very first solo E.P. that’s certainly very deserving. I’ve gone straight to the closer, “Kepler” for its depth which is rarely seen at BPMs this high.
12. “WE HIT DRUMS” – MADBEN & KOSME [EPM MUSIC]
Techno enthusiasts, Madben & Kosme unite for a five-track effort that features this drum-heavy one that might just be paying homage to “Spastik.”
Never mind the sheer power of this production, check out the laser-like synth that could easily be from another galaxy.
14. “LAVANDE 03 [240106]” – RØDHÅD, UFO95 [WSNWG]
After an appearance in the techno chart this past April, French producer, UFO95 is back again on this collaboration with techno extraordinaire, Rødhåd!
15. “THE LAST VOYAGER” – SPACE 92 [FILTH ON ACID]
Space 92‘s title track via Filth on Acid is far too upfront for my taste but the b-side checks all the boxes when it comes quality, big-room techno.
