When a great LP comes along that falls within the confines of house music, I do my best to include the highlights and Nathan Haines LP, Notes was that very album this past month. Not to mention, the L.P. was co-created with the legendary, Phil Asher who is sadly no longer with us.
Follow the best house tracks of the year so far:
1. “LOVE YOU MORE” – NATHAN HAINES [EMK]
“A few weeks after his passing I loaded up one of Phil’s beats in the Maschine and let it roll. Then I programmed up a sound on my Sequential Circuits Prophet T8 and used the Unison/ track function which enables you to play a chord then hold it and span it across the keyboard. I recorded the soprano saxophone part in one take, aiming for a raw and authentic sound. I closed my eyes and just conjured up the vibe of what we used to do together“. -Nathan Haines
2. “DE BONGO MAN” – TOMAN [CECILLE]
Amsterdam’s Toman makes his debut on Cecille with a solid set of tunes which includes “De Bongo Man.” A quasi-disco rumbler that makes excellent, syncopated use of the bongo fill.
3. “JOURNEY TO THE PEAK” – NATHAN HAINES [EMK]
“Journey To The Peak” is jazz-house at its finest coming from New Zealand producer and saxophonist, Nathan Haines.
4. “LATELY (ADAM TEN & MITA GAMI EXTENDED REMIX)” – RÜFÜS DU SOL [ROSE AVENUE/REPRISE]
Rüfüs Du Sol’s newest single is accompanied by this sleek revision from one of dance music’s hottest duo who just so happen to be doing the rounds at Burning Man this week.
5. “STELLA” – BENJAMIN BERG & D STONE [DARK SIDE OF THE SUN]
Along with a coveted remix by D’Julz, the third and final original by Benjamin Berg & D Stone on Dark Side of the Sun is an ethereal jammer which is quite special.
6. “EIDERDOWN” – MARK SLEE [MANJUMASI]
Mark Slee is back on his imprint with a pair of deeply enchanting tunes including this title cut that belongs in your Burning Man playlist if you’re headed out to the playa this week.
7. “VELVETEEN” – MARK SLEE [MANJUMASI]
I couldn’t resist Eiderdown’s counterpart, “Velveteen.” An equally engaging 303 adventure that belongs in the spotlight this month as well.
8. “AMERICAN DREAM (PROFF EXTENDED INTERPRETATION)” – JAKATTA [ANJUNADEEP]
Following a hotly anticipated premiere on Anjunadeep 15, PROFF’s ‘Interpretation’ of Jakatta’s ‘American Dream’ is released in full.
9. “VICINO O’ MARE (THE SHAPESHIFTERS EXTENDED REMIX)” – RIVA STARR [SNATCH! RECORDS]
Vicino O’ Mare gets the dope remix treatment from The Shapeshifters and Sam Ruffillo & Fimiani, both really delivered amazing versions including a massive Piano Bump dub.
10. “NO FAITH, NO DREAMS” – STEVE BUG & HERVÉ SOLAR [SUBLEASE MUSIC]
These two artists first crossed paths at the Mixmasters retreat in Ibiza, where Hervé participated as a student under the guidance of Steve Bug. Impressed by Hervé’s material, Steve Bug saw potential for collaboration. Upon returning to Geneva, Hervé sent Steve a few unfinished tracks, sparking the idea for a joint EP. The creative process involved each artist sending a track for the other to complete, with Steve Bug adding the final touches in his Berlin studio.
11. “SWAMP FROG” – STEVE BUG & HERVÉ SOLAR [SUBLEASE MUSIC]
“Swamp Frog” is the 3rd track of the release, a grooving bass-line providing the anchor for the rhythm and detuned chords that lend the whole thing a wonky, loose feel for the heads.
12. “SAMBA” – CASSIMM, WH0 [GOLDEN RECORDINGS]
CASSIMM‘S collaboration with Wh0 on Golden Recordings is a high-tempo, house heater that’ll light any dance-floor on fire.
13. “MOVE” – ESSEL, MERYLL [TOOLROOM]
ESSEL is back on Toolroom with this heavyweight hitter that radiates attitude thanks to a sassy vocal courtesy of Meryll.
14. “COCO PUFFS” – MATT CASELI [KITTBALL]
Kittball describes “Coco Puffs” simply as “a touch of summer madness,” while I would call that a severe understatement. The original from Matt Caseli on Kittball Konspiracy Vol. 27 is drug-fueled tech house that doesn’t hold back whatsoever.
15. “ANIMAL” – RAJA [BRAHMAN]
Ukrainian Berlin-based artist, RAJA crafts a sonic journey here amidst the majestic and raw beauty of nature.
