After a five-year hiatus, James Cullen and Dan Cobb embrace a fresh direction, balancing their signature atmospheric synths with deeper emotional themes rooted in personal growth and fatherhood. Released via Nettwerk, the incredible new project from TENDER – Flux showcases 11 tracks that capture the duo’s evolving sound and lyrical maturity.
The title track, “flux,” serves as the album’s emotional centerpiece, detailing the uncertainty Cullen faced upon discovering he was becoming a father during the pandemic. This introspective storytelling flows seamlessly through the record, blending lush synths, trip-hop grooves, and ambient textures that create an immersive listening experience. Lead singer James explains that “The day I found out I was going to be a father was the same day I was leaving New York and my soon-to-be wife to go home to London. I didn’t know the next time I would see her or how the future looked. This song is about that day, that journey to the airport and the thoughts going through my head.”
Tracks like “cutting grass” and “sprinkles” highlight the duo’s knack for pairing danceable beats with melancholic undertones, while “daydreamers” and “go steady” introduce playful elements, blending funk basslines and vocal samples with poignant lyrical themes.
