“9 to 5”: Shannon K Teams Up with Kumar Sanu for a Song That Speaks to the Heart

Shannon K, the rising star known for her captivating voice and heartfelt lyrics, has teamed up with her father, Bollywood superstar Kumar Sanu, for their latest release, “9 to 5.” This new song is more than just a catchy tune; it’s a reflection on the daily grind and the importance of pursuing one’s passions. Shannon K, born on June 16, 2001, in Mumbai, India, has been making a name for herself from a very young age in both film and music. Her musical journey began with the debut single “Roll Back The Years” at age 12, and her major release “A Long Time” in 2018 garnered over 41 million views on YouTube.

Discussing the inspiration behind the song, Shannon says, “The concept of talking about people’s 9 to 5 routine was quite relatable even in today’s world. Through our song, I hope that the listeners feel encouraged to step out of their zone and be able to also do what they love and are passionate about.” Shannon elaborates on the creative process with her sister Annabelle. “We were super inspired by the 80s anthem ‘9 to 5’ by Dolly Parton which had stated the issues back in the days in the business industry and women in business. We liked the thought of creating something that would resonate with all of us and our lives but also research how the lifestyle has changed over the years.”

Shannon’s notable tracks include “Give Me Your Hand,” an anti-bullying anthem co-written with her sister Annabelle, which won the HMMA Award for Best Original Song. She has collaborated with artists like Sonu Nigam and Kyle Townsend and ventured into acting with roles in “The Big Feed,” “Mystical Inheritance of Adina Hassan,” and “Chal Zindagi.” Shannon’s diverse discography, including songs like “Sapphire,” “Lately,” “Always,” and “Run,” showcases her unique blend of pop, soul, and R&B.

Working with her father after seven years was a nostalgic and memorable experience for Shannon. “The most memorable part was convincing Dad to sing a few lines in English. He was iffy about it, but we really charged him up!” Shannon believes that music can profoundly influence people’s perspectives on work-life balance. “Music is an escape mechanism from our very crazy, chaotic life. We wanted to get the message across to people to not stop living their life and most importantly, enjoying it.”

Shannon reflects on the song’s deeper meaning, “We wanted to create something that would resonate with all of us and our lives but also research how the lifestyle has changed over the years. We are kinda stuck in this loop which stops us from enjoying ourselves.” Blending modern musical elements with her father’s classic style was key to creating a cohesive sound. “Dad truly sprinkled his magic on the song with his soulful voice which blended so well with the mid-tempo beat.”

Reflecting on the emotional journey while working on “9 to 5,” Shannon notes, “There was a phase where we all were heavily invested in our work, trying to complete assignments, trying to compete with one another, following a pattern. Somewhere along the way, I think we forgot to really live our lives in terms of enjoying the littlest happiness.”

Shannon introduces new musical elements in “9 to 5,” including a Latin house sound infused by Lugo González. “The interesting factor about this song is that if you hear it the first time, it’ll feel like a dance song, but when you listen to the lyrics, that’s when you’ll realize the actual story.” “9 to 5” captures the essence of love and support across generations. “I think with our message of encouraging people to not give up on their passion and dreams just because they have a set lifestyle is what we wanted to achieve. So far the feedback has been very positive and it’s great to see how many people are actually relating themselves with the song.”

Looking ahead, Shannon promises more exciting projects. “There are loads of songs in the pipeline, some of which I hadn’t explored in the past, so I’m very excited to see how the journey goes!” Shannon’s contributions to music and her active involvement in social causes make her a noteworthy artist to watch. Her career is marked by resilience and a commitment to staying true to herself despite facing challenges, including discrimination and bullying during her early years.
