More often than not these days, it seems like people are producers before breaking into the live performance sphere. This wasn’t the case with South Africa’s Shazz.
Known as a phenomenal house DJ and curator, Shazz has become one of the fastest rising stars in the South African house music scene. She’s played iconic clubs in Johannesburg, Cape Town and the Northern Cape, and has earned kudos from the likes of Vinny Da Vinci and DJ Christos. She’s also been a familiar face on house music podcasts and platforms like Tequila Gang. Basically, she had done everything except release music.
And, now, she’s done that, too.
Released on Scottish label Dealt With Records, Shazz has just released her first EP: “Frequency Frontier.” It’s a bold new chapter, and if her previous work is anything to go by, it’s going to resonate far beyond South Africa’s borders.

The EP offers two standout tracks: “Synthesia,” a track with a borderline-oceanic vibe, with hypnotic pads and a deep-sea bassline pulling you further in; and “Infinite Frequencies,” where dusty Rhodes keys and an old-school 808 rhythm paint a soundscape that sounds like it’s fresh out of the 1990s. It’s a stripped back look at deep house, and highly impressive for an artist’s debut release.
If her pedigree as a live act and the quality of her first official release are anything to go off of, then let this be a sign to keep an eye on Shazz. She’s certainly a name to watch.
