Since he emerged onto the scene with “Gecko (Overdrive),” Oliver Heldens has been pushing the envelope creatively, first spearheading the rise of the future house sound, and now championing the emerging bass house genre with his new HI-LO alias. The Dutch phenom unveiled himself as HI-LO with the announcement of his Heldeep Records imprint, where he premiered the inaugural HI-LO release, “Renegade Mastah.” Now, after a brief hiatus from his bass-focused garage alias, “Ooh La La” marks Heldens’ return to his HI-LO persona, and it is massive. Placing an emphasis on the percussion rather than the melody, “Ooh La La” is reminiscent of some of the best electronic tracks for the genre’s early years, as the modulated bass line comes together the heady synth work for an impressive result.
