Liam Neeson could be stepping away from action films in 2025.
Neeson, who has enjoyed a resurgence in his career since the late 2000s after starring in numerous action films like Taken and Non-Stop, has revealed that he plans on retiring from making action movies by the end of next year.
Speaking to PEOPLE magazine, Neeson said that his time to move away from the genre is nearing, citing his age as a major reason: “I’m 72 — it has to stop at some stage. You can’t fool audiences.”
Neeson – who has performed the majority of his own stunts throughout his career with some help from longtime stunt collaborator Mark Vanselow – added: “I don’t want Mark to be fighting my fight scenes for me. Maybe the end of next year. I think that’s it.”
This isn’t the first time the actor has spoken about walking away from the action genre. In 2022, the actor said that while he was still somehow “getting away” with action role offers, he would have to “stop at some stage” because “audiences aren’t stupid.”
Since his action movie breakthrough with Taken in 2008, Neeson has gone on to star in numerous other action movies, including two Taken sequels. Other prominent action films under his belt include The Grey (2012), Non-Stop (2014), Run All Night (2015), The Commuter (2018), The Ice Road (2021) and more. His next action film, Absolution, will arrive in November.
Liam Neeson is also next set to star in a reboot of the Naked Gunn franchise. Scheduled for an August 2025 release, the movie will star Neeson as bumbling cop Frank Drebin Jr. opposite a femme fatale played by Pamela Anderson.
