Kendrick Lamar just made history.

Mr. Lamar just won the Pulitzer Prize for music for his most recent album DAMN. This makes him the first rapper to take home such an award in the 101 year history of the selections. Typically allotted for classical acts, Kendrick just joined the ranks of esteemed poets, journalists and authors.

The Pulitzer Board described DAMN. as “a virtuosic song collection” that captures “the complexity of modern African-American life.”

Kendrick just proved to the entire nation that hip-hop is one of the most influential genres of our time. He is paving the way for rap through his sharp tongue and lyrical genius.

“It shines light on hip-hop in a completely different way. This is a big moment for hip-hop and a big moment for the Pulitzers” said administrator of the prizes, Dana Canedy in an interview with New York Times. “We are very proud of this selection. It means that the jury and the board judging system worked as it’s supposed to —the best work was awarded a Pulitzer Prize.”

DAMN. was nominated for several Grammy’s in 2017 and took home the Grammy for Best Rap Album.
