We’re rounding out the first calendar year of Magnetic Magazine Recordings on a high note today with the release of Will Vance & KaZkO’s “Call to Mind.” It’s a triumphant end to a strong year for both artists, featuring organic instrumentation blended seamlessly with an infectious melodic house groove. It received a ton of positive feedback during the pre-release week – clearly, we’re not the only ones who love this one.
While we know and love label head Will Vance, KaZkO is a new face to the family. Perhaps best known for his single “Last Runner,” which was released on the legendary Mango Alley this February, the Sri Lankan producer and DJ has been turning heads for quite some time now with his talent for creating dance floor ready tech house, progressive house, and melodic techno. But, on “Call to Mind,” he presents a softer, more melodic side of himself we haven’t seen much in his prior work. Clearly, he’s got great range as a producer, and we’re so thrilled to have him as a part of our label roster.
In celebration of his debut release, we sat down with him to get to know him a little more. So, for the last time in 2024, go check out the full release here, and then come back to learn more about KaZkO!
One last thing before we get into the interview: we wanted to thank all of you for your support of Magnetic Magazine Recordings in 2024, and we cannot wait to show you what we’ve got planned for 2025!
Who are the artists or sounds that most shaped your style early on?
In the beginning, I was inspired by the sounds and styles of legendary artists like The Chemical Brothers, Carl Cox, Guy J, and Richie Hawtin. Their innovative approach to music, unique soundscapes, and groundbreaking contributions to electronic music deeply influenced my journey into audio and music production.
What’s the one sound or technique that you think defines your signature style?
My signature sound is all about combining different elements into one. I focus on looking toward the future while staying connected to the present, mixing dark and light tones to create a balanced and unique style. This helps me bring contrast and harmony into my music, making it feel deeper and more emotional.
Why do you think it’s important for artists to focus on developing their own sound rather than chasing trends?
It’s really important to create your own sound rather than chasing trends. By focusing on originality and experimenting with your own ideas, you can offer something unique that stands out. This not only allows you to express yourself authentically but also gives listeners a fresh and different experience, setting your work apart in a world full of repetition.
Why do you think some artists get stuck in a certain sound, and how do you keep pushing your boundaries?
In my opinion, creating your own music with your own sounds consistently is great, but it’s important to evolve and introduce some changes over time. Sticking to the same sound for years can make things feel repetitive, so even small changes can make a big difference. Personally, I often draw inspiration from other music styles, which helps me explore new ideas and develop a more unique and versatile style. Experimenting with different influences keeps my sound fresh and allows me to grow as an artist.
How do you know when a track is finished?
When a track sounds good to my ears and feels complete, I know it’s ready. Before taking it to the next step, I listen to it several times to ensure everything feels right, and then I test it out in real-world settings to see how it resonates.
What’s the biggest mistake you see other producers making when it comes to their creative process?
Rushing to finish a track is never a good idea. Taking your time and stepping away for a while can help you come back with fresh, creative ideas. Patience allows you to refine your work and ensure it reaches its full potential, rather than settling for something unfinished or uninspired.
What’s one piece of advice you’d give to an artist who’s struggling to find their sound?
Take your time to develop an idea for a track and experiment with different sounds until you find something that truly resonates with you. The process of exploring and refining helps ensure that the final result feels authentic and matches your vision.
What’s the one element every track you release has to have to feel complete to you?
For me, the essential elements of any track are the drums and bass. Without fully developing these two key components, the track feels incomplete and empty.
What’s the best piece of advice you’ve ever received from another artist or producer?
Don’t compare yourself or your sound to others. You are unique, and your music has its own value. Focus on making people happy with your creations and live performances. This is the best advice I’ve ever received.
