Jack Black has scored the shortest ever US Billboard chart hit with ‘Steve’s Lava Chicken’ from A Minecraft Movie.
The song, which clocks in at just 34 seconds long, sees Black’s lead character Steve singing about roasting a chicken using molten lava and its absurd and hooky nature has clearly been a hit with fans of the film.
Now, thanks to the film’s immense popularity, it has cracked the Billboard Hot 100, charting at Number 77 this week. In doing so, the track breaks the record for the shortest song to make the singles chart, which was previously held by Kid Cudi’s 37-second interlude ‘Beautiful Trip’.
It achieved a similar feat in the UK last week, becoming the shortest ever UK Top 40 single when it landed at Number 21 on April 18’s chart. This side of the pond it took the record off Jonny Trunk and Wisbey’s 36-second hit ‘The Ladies’ Bras’, which peaked at Number 27 in 2007.

It also becomes Black’s highest ever charting single in the UK, overtaking ‘Peaches’ from The Super Mario Bros. Movie in 2023, which made it to Number 27. Tenacious D have also made the charts in the past with ‘POD’ (24) and ‘Tribute’ (84).
Despite poor reviews, the movie adaptation of hit video game Minecraft has become the biggest film of 2025 so far.
It also inspired fierce debates about cinema etiquette after clips of audiences singing along to the film, throwing tubs of popcorn and generally losing their minds to the “chicken jockey” scene went viral across social media. Some cinemas issued warnings that “any form of anti-social behaviour, especially anything that may disturb other guests such as loud screaming, clapping and shouting will not be tolerated,” while Jack Black also surprised fans by turning up to a screening of A Minecraft Movie and asked people not to throw popcorn.
In response, Warner Bros. announced plans for “noisy” screenings, coined A Minecraft Movie: Block Party Edition. The new screenings will take place next month and will encourage audiences to “sing (and meme) along” with the movie.
In a two-star review, NME wrote: “Unfortunately, A Minecraft Movie feels more like an advert for the game rather than a celebration of what makes it great. There is just enough in the brisk 101-minute runtime to inspire newcomers to check out The Overworld for themselves but you’d think a film about the awesome power of creativity would be a bit more innovative.”
