“Nigel spent some time in Hamburg, and it inspired ‘Bruno’, which is from Cruel But Fair’s album Altona. It’s about Bruno Tesch, who was a plumber and a leader of a counter demonstration against a march by Nazis through Altona, a working-class district of Hamburg in 1932. 18 people were shot dead by the police and many more injured. Bruno and the other leaders were falsely convicted and executed the following year after a ‘show trial.’ Simon thought ALTONA was a strong image, the theme inspired a few songs on the album, and we think the theme resonates today.”
