I don’t know if it’s just me, but it’s been a while since I’ve heard a really good fusion record. By that, I mean a track or an album that takes inspirations from two very different genres and blends those styles together effortlessly to create something truly unique.
At least, I hadn’t heard one for a while until I came across the debut album by the singer-producer duo Caplin & Massiah.
This duo has an absolutely wild backstory. Zeeteah Massiah was born in Barbados and has had quite the illustrious career, performing with artists like Robbie Williams and touring with the king of pop himself, Michael Jackson. She’s also charted in the UK and the USA, scoring a No. 1 dance hit in the States.

Paul Caplin started out his career in the 80s as a member of Haysi Fantayzee, and then went on to have a successful career in the tech industry. He’s finally back making music now as the duo’s producer and videographer.
With both artists having serious pedigree, it is no surprise that their debut record, “Chemistry,” is a triumph. It’s really unlike anything I’ve heard before, seamlessly fusing synthpop, reggaeton, Afrobeats, and dancehall. All of these influences are blended so well that I don’t know if I can assign a single genre to this record. It’s its own thing.
Throughout the tracklist, Caplin’s smooth production style is perfectly complimented by Massiah’s masterful vocal work. She shows just how versatile she is on this record, delving into rhythmic spoken-word on “Dance to It,” powerful pop vocal choruses on “Shaped Like You,” and near-anguished, soulful ballad-style lyrics on “You Don’t Know.” And, on all of these tracks, Caplin is able to dial up the perfect production style for the vocals at hand; whether it’s a slow, somber number or an upbeat, sun-drenched instrumental. The two do it all on this album.
“Chemistry” is the perfect name for this album, because these two have a seemingly endless amount of it. They work together perfectly, and it’s clear that this is only the start of a special career as a duo.
