Preparing for a date night can be a stressful experience. There are so many ways the date can go and so many things that can turn out wrong. The music you go with, for example, can either make the date truly magical or ruin the entire mood.

As dramatic as this may sound, the solution is actually pretty simple. Here are a few tips to keep in mind when looking for the best music for your next date night.

How to know which song is “the best” for your date night?

Putting on some music for a date night can be as simple as searching for “love ballad list” on Spotify and hitting Play on the first thing you see – you don’t need to buy branded disks or anything of the sort. This can work, but there are ways to make the night even more special. For example, did you know there was an old Spotify study in which many people claimed they found certain songs more s-xually arousing than touch? Here are a few tips for how you can accomplish the same effect:

Don’t try to be psychic – just ask your date

The best date night experience – and relationship experience in general – usually comes down to communication. There is no point trying to channel your inner Nostradamus when you can simply ask your date, “Hey, what music do you like?”

This can sound counterintuitive to a lot of young guys who think it’s best to “impress” their dates by magically guessing the perfect music playlist. Instead, the much smarter approach is to just ask. You’ll find many girls find it just as impressive when guys have proper communication skills.

Besides – all women are different. What one girl likes, another can find abhorrent. There are even 3-5% of people who have musical anhedonia and are straight-up apathetic toward music.

Ask her music-related questions

If you don’t get a straight answer to the “What music do you like?” question, you can ask related questions too – where is your date from, what kind of music is popular there, what concerts she’s been to, etc.

A girl you met at a local bar will have drastically different answers from a foreign girl you’ve met online on mail-order sites for international brides for marriage, such as BridesUniverse.

Consider “the goal” of the date

Is this just a casual date? Are you hoping things might get serious? Is this a one-night stand, or is there actually potential she’ll be your wife one day? These are drastically different situations that require different music styles.

When in doubt, it’s best to go with something unintrusive

Even if we don’t count musical anhedonia, many people just don’t like being distracted when talking with others or when “engaging in physical activities.” So, it’s often best to avoid distractingly popular songs. Indie music can be a great option in such cases. Instrumental music is also worth considering, as it’s often the lyrics that put some people off.

Often, the volume, quality, and source of the music are more important than the music itself

Remember to consider – or ask her about – the music’s volume. Even if you’ve found the perfect playlist, if it’s too loud, it can be intrusive. Vice versa, even if the playlist isn’t perfect, if it’s just quiet in the background, it won’t be a mood-killer.

In conclusion – it’s best to prepare something personalized to your date. If you can’t, try the classics, but make sure you have a backup plan

A personalized music playlist is the best option – not only does it guarantee that your date will like it, but it gives you something extra to talk about. People often get scared by the word “personalized,” but it doesn’t mean you need to put too much time and effort into it. Instead, it’s often as simple as asking her, “Which is your favorite band?” or “Which is your favorite concert you’ve been to?” and then just find said band on Spotify and hit Play.

If this type of approach isn’t doable in your particular situation, there are plenty of Spotify lists of love ballads you can go to. Yes, a lot of them are full of old evergreens, but that’s not actually a bad thing. The Spotify study into people’s favorite songs we mentioned earlier included multiple lists of love ballads (we’ll add a few below). You’ll notice that, even though the study itself is over a decade old, the vast majority of the songs there were even older. This implies that the majority of people do prefer evergreens on date nights.

But, again – just in case your girl doesn’t like such classics or prefers not to be distracted by popular songs while on a date, it’s best to have a backup of indie music. Spotify isn’t the best place for indie music, but there are plenty of other smaller platforms where such songs are abundant. You can even find good indie lists on YouTube.
