A couple attending the Burning Man festival experienced an astounding event when they became parents for the first time after a surprise birth. The mother, who was unaware she was pregnant, gave birth to a baby girl in their camper in the desert.

The baby, named Aurora, arrived unexpectedly to Kayla Thompson, 36, and Kasey Thompson, 39, who are from Salt Lake City. Kayla stated she had no signs of pregnancy before the sudden and premature delivery. She was not showing and had no symptoms that would have suggested she was carrying a child.

Kasey Thompson, the new father, told the Los Angeles Times that the birth was “an absolute miracle.” He went on to say that if he had known about the pregnancy, the festival would have been “the absolutely last place on this planet I would have been.” This began in the early hours of Wednesday morning when Kayla woke up with sharp pain in her stomach. Within minutes, she was in labor and delivered the baby in their vehicle, which was stuck in the muddy desert. Kasey immediately began yelling for help.

Several medical professionals appeared out of nowhere to offer aid. “In a matter of minutes, we had an [obstetrician], a NICU nurse, a pediatrician in there — I don’t know where they all came from, they just came,” Kasey said. Aurora was born weighing 3 pounds and 9 ounces and was 16.5 inches long. The baby needed immediate medical care and was taken by a helicopter to a neonatal intensive care unit in Reno, Nevada.

The newborn was lifted via helicopter to a near hospital, and so was Kayla. Aurora is still in the hospital for care, but she’s stable. A GoFundMe page has been made by their family to help with medical and travel costs.
