Everybody is talking about Childish Gambino‘s music video “This Is America,” which tackles heavy political issues, particularly gun violence.
Over the weekend, Donald Glover (aka Childish Gambino) hosted Saturday Night Live and used the platform for more than just dropping a hot hip hop track. Introducing “This Is America,” he made and continues to make a huge statement.
Within the first few moments of the music video, the rapper shoots someone dead with much nonchalance. It’s shocking to say the least and sure to get your attention from the get go. He continues about his business, dancing around strangely with facial expressions to match. However, when you play the music video back, it’s obvious Childish Gambino is serving as a decoy from what’s going on around him. Sound familiar?
Then, it happens again as he opens fire on an entire choir of gospel singers. It’s obvious what he’s trying to say here — gun violence needs to stop. The underlying message — stay woke and don’t give into distractions.
Gambino is being praised for his social commentary and artistry, as heard with “This Is America.” This definitely won’t be the last we hear from him.
