Two confessions.
First, I am partial to a fault when it comes to Mojang Studios. I like everything they do—and even what they don’t do. Second, I’ve been waiting for the native PlayStation 5 version of Minecraft with as much excitement as I had when the game first launched.
That being said, I understand why Minecraft fans have been calling for a proper PS5 version for so long. There’s been this growing demand for the PS5 to get the same treatment as the Xbox Series X, where loading times and performance were significantly improved. Until now, it feels like PS5 players have been left behind, stuck with the last-gen version on their shiny new consoles.
Let’s be honest: until now, the only way to play Minecraft on the PS5 was to load the regular PS4 version, go into settings, and opt into the PS5 preview option. It wasn’t seamless, and it certainly wasn’t what you would expect from a next-gen console experience. It was a bit cumbersome, not to mention disappointing for those who’ve been eager to see the game take full advantage of the PS5’s hardware.
But here we are, with Mojang finally ready to launch a native PS5 version of Minecraft. The official release date is October 22, and I couldn’t be more excited to see what this update brings Buy Minecraft now at the cheapest prices on PS5
Why? Because it’s not just a simple upgrade—it’s a long-overdue evolution for the game we’ve all been playing for years. Here’s why I’m particularly hyped about it.
1. Full Use of PS5 Hardware
This upgrade is going to be a game-changer, and it’s not just about visuals. The new native version is set to fully utilize the PS5’s hardware, which means we should see a massive boost in performance. This is especially important for Minecraft because the game can get really demanding when you’re navigating large, complex builds or playing in creative mode with endless possibilities.
I expect the PS5 version to handle those intense areas with ease. The performance drops that occasionally happen when you’re building something massive or flying around in creative mode should become a thing of the past. For a game that’s as expansive as Minecraft, this is a huge deal. Players will be able to enjoy larger worlds without the frustration of slowdowns, freezes, or crashes.
That alone makes the upgrade worth the wait, but there’s more.
2. Lightning-Fast Loading Times
If you’ve played Minecraft on the Xbox Series X, you’ve probably noticed how fast it loads. The native version on that console reduced loading times significantly. While the PS5 port of the PS4 version has always been a bit slow, that’s about to change.
We’ve all been there—waiting what feels like an eternity for Minecraft to load, especially when you’re switching between worlds or jumping into the game from another application. Rumor has it that with the native PS5 version, load times could drop to as little as 12 seconds. For a game like Minecraft, which used to take minutes to load at times, this is a huge improvement.
I’m particularly looking forward to this because it’ll make the whole experience feel more seamless. Whether you’re jumping into a world from a cold start or switching from another game, those long waits will be a thing of the past. For me, it’s going to make the entire game feel much smoother and more responsive.
3. 4K Resolution at 60 FPS
One of the biggest reasons to be excited about the PS5 version is the promised full 4K resolution at 60 FPS. Yes, it’s Minecraft, and some people might think, “How much better can it look?” But trust me, it’s going to be a noticeable difference.
In the native PS5 version, the edges of blocks and animals will look sharper, the colors more vibrant, and the overall visual fidelity will benefit greatly. Smoother animations will make everything feel more fluid, which means the gameplay will be more immersive. The bump in resolution and frame rate isn’t just about looks—it’s about making the game feel more alive.
For a game built on simple blocks, these kinds of improvements can make a surprisingly big impact.
4. Improved GUI Scale for Larger Screens
Now, I have a confession to make. I’ve got a 60-inch OLED TV, and I’m always partial to games that take advantage of its size and clarity. This is where the native PS5 version of Minecraft is going to shine for people like me.
One of the new features I’m most excited about is the ability to control the GUI scale. For those who love playing on larger screens, this is a big deal. You’ll be able to shrink down the menus and HUD elements, so they don’t take up half the screen. On a larger display, this is going to make a huge difference in how the game looks and feels. No more cluttered screen with oversized buttons and indicators getting in the way of the gameplay. Instead, you’ll have a cleaner, more immersive experience that lets you focus on the world around you.
5. Expanded Render Distance
If there’s one feature that truly defines Minecraft, it’s the sense of exploration. And that’s why the increased render distance is such a game-changer. The render distance on the PS5 version is set to increase from 28 chunks to 36 chunks. That might not sound like much to the uninitiated, but trust me, it makes a world of difference—literally.
This means you’ll be able to see further into the distance, giving you a more expansive view of the environment. Planning large builds or exploring new terrain will be more fun and less limited by visual restrictions. You’ll be able to see more of the world at once, making the game feel bigger and more immersive.
A Few Final Thoughts
Some of my friends expected more from this release. One, who’s a notable voice in the Minecraft online community, thought there might be DualSense controller support at launch, but I’m not holding my breath for that. There’s also been no mention of PSVR 2 support, which might disappoint some VR fans.
But honestly, that doesn’t bother me. I’m just excited to see the game finally come to PS5 in a way that truly takes advantage of the hardware.
Stick with me—I’ll be writing a follow-up post to compare the reality of the PS5 version to my expectations once it’s out.
