It’s an incredible piece of electronica from 1tbsp that’s impossible to pigeon-hole
Australian producer 1tbsp, also known as Golden Vessel, has woven a rich tapestry of sounds that defy easy categorization. Drawing influences from house, UK garage, and unclassifiable experimental beats, 1tbsp has crafted a distinctive sound that feels fresh and innovative.
The album is a narrative exploration of the complexities of modern urban life, touching on themes like population growth, climate change, and gentrification. Byrne cleverly contrasts these heavy themes with an upbeat, danceable soundscape, creating a unique listening experience that is both thought-provoking and entertaining. Tracks like “Starchitect,” “Limosina (feat. Cherry Chola),” and “The City Never Felt So Good” showcase his knack for infectious indie-house rhythms, while “MC1k” and “Oh No” highlight his ability to blend various electronic styles seamlessly. The entire album, has an enviable groove that’s unique to the artist and unlike anything we’ve come across in modern electronic music. There’s the beautiful chaotic rhythms of Floating Points with the catchy, almost pop- leaning songwriting guile of Fred Again.
Speaking on the concept behind the album, 1tbsp explains it as “A concept dance album that I put together over the last year. I’ve been really fascinated and intimidated by the problems that my generation are starting to face around expanding population growth, climate change & gentrification.
The promotion of the album (ironically pro-capitalistic) follows the arc of building the city, trying to bring on investors & entice people to move, and then ultimately the city failing.” – 1tbsp
The album’s visuals, inspired by Jacques Tati’s Playtime and Fritz Lang’s Metropolis, add a layer of depth to the project, emphasizing the concept of a fabricated city and its ultimate downfall. Megacity1000 is a bold statement in the indie dance scene, reflecting 1tbsp’s talent for combining escapism with a meaningful commentary on our rapidly changing world.
