Today, tech giant Apple Inc, has officially stated that they will be discontinuing the production of their AirPort Wi-Fi routers. The routers were long expected to becoming discontinued according to reports from Bloomberg all the way back in 2016. The routers have not seen a software update since 2013 and are no longer in high demand by customers. Basically, the routers let products like iPhones, Macs, and iPads connect to the internet wirelessly. Apple currently has three versions, the AirPort Extreme, AirPort Express, and the AirPort Time Capsule that can store files.
Although Apple
rarely discontinues products, dropping the routers will not negatively impact the corporation financially. Apple is expected to continue rolling out security patches and bug fixes in the future. Once the remaining devices are sold out, no more will be manufactured. Wi-Fi systems like Google Wifi, Linksys Velop, and Eero are in high demand by consumers and are sold in Apple Stores today. Over the years, Apple is starting to focus more on products like the Apple TV and HomePod for home usage.Future for AirPort Routers
While Apple’s AirPort devices might be gone now, there is still hope for a comeback in the future. It is reported that Apple commented to Engadget that “the company might return to the space sometime in the future if it finds a meaningful way to progress routers in the future”. With the disappointing HomePod sales, who knows if that will be the next product to drop from Apple’s line of products.
